Remote Monitoring of Transformer or Generator Health Over Internet Project

The remote monitoring of transformer or generator health over the internet is one kind of system that can be used for the instantaneous data monitoring of transformer (or) generator through the internet. As we know that, the transformer and generator are the most important electrical equipment’s in every power system. If anyone of these can damage due to some reasons like current, temperature, voltage then the entire supply would be turned off. Then both the time and money would be a waste. So the real-time monitor of these two is compulsory for providing the level supply to the customer. There are many researchers are working on this to protect and monitor the expensive equipment. This article gives an overview of remote monitoring of transformer or generator health over internet using microcontroller.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

  • Most common LCDs connected to the microcontrollers are 16×2 and 20×2 displays.
  • This means 16 characters per line by 2 lines and 20 characters per line by 2 lines, respectively.
  • The standard is referred to as HD44780U, which refers to the controller chip which receives data from an external source (and communicates directly with the LCD.

LM 35 Temperature Sensor

  • LM35 are used to sense the heat and an IC ADC0808 is used to convert the data into digital.
  • The LM35 digital sensor has got 3 pin’s i.e., VCC, GND and output pin’s when
  • LM35 is heated the voltage at output pin increases, it is connected to the analog to digital converter IC (ADC).
  • The LM35 series are precision integrated-circuit temperature sensors, whose output voltage is linearly proportional to the Celsius (Centigrade) temperature.
  • The LM35 thus has an advantage over linear temperature sensors calibrated in Kelvin, as the user is not required to subtract a large constant voltage from its output to obtain the convenient Centigrade scaling.
  • The LM35 does not require any external calibration or trimming to provide typical accuracies of ±1⁄4˚C at room temperature and ±3⁄4˚C over a full −55 to +150˚C temperature range.

Project Working

The main aim of the project is to acquire data of distribution transformers remotely by IOT. One temperature sensor, one potential transformer, and one current transformer are used. These three parameters of the transformer are monitored and then send the same data to a remote location.LM35 is used to sense the temperature of the transformer and it is fed to the microcontroller through ADC 0808. The current transformer arrangement provides a maximum of 5 A current can be sensed. Potential Transformer is used to sense the voltage fluctuations of the Transformer.

All these three sensing arrangements are done through an ADC 0808 and it will send the data to microcontroller AT89s52.3 analog value is taken in multiplexing mode connected to a programmable microcontroller of 8051 families An IC ADC 0808 is used ,then the values of all the sensors are sent sequentially as per the frequency of multiplexing of the ADC by MC

They are then sent directly through allot IP fed to it, to any nearby wireless modem which is then received by a Wi-Fi module interfaced to a microcontroller of 8051 series, under TCP IP via networked wireless modem environment. It can also handle the error signal to operate the corresponding relay for any action with LCD display.
